Rainy Day Games
http://www.wonderville.ca/browse/fun_science?pid=3
Wonderville has some fun science related games. I had a chance to play a few of the biodiversity games. They seem relevant to our content in class. There are also games related to the states of matter, the solar system and many more!
http://www.funbrain.com/grammar/
Fun Brain has loads of games - some academic and some not as academic - but grammar gorillas is a fun games to practice parts of speech and other grammar related skills.
http://www.kwarp.com/portfolio/grammarninja.html
And then there is Grammar Ninjas...
http://www.math-play.com/multiplication-games.html
Computation Games! I played the memory match game. There are other games as well!
http://www.funbrain.com/brain/ReadingBrain/ReadingBrain.html
A different way to do reading on a rainy day - Fun Brain has some comics including characters from Diary of a Wimpy Kid and some of the characters from the games found on Fun Brain.

Colorado Standards
http://www.cde.state.co.us/StandardsAndInstruction/ColoradoStandards-AcademicStandards.asp
This link is from the Colorado Department of Education. There is a PDF file available for download that lists the standards in accessible language. There are some changes to the jargon used within the standards. There are some pronounced changes are within the literacy and mathematics standards. Literacy is now found under "Reading, Writing and Communication". As teachers, we have come to know these as the "ELA" standards, a term which previously was designed to identify "English Language Acquisition" or those students who are learning English as a Second Language. Some exciting additions are within literacy in technology, oral communication skills and the introduction of characters from Greek mythology.
The math standards are exciting as well. As teachers, we will now be allotted more time to go deeper into mathematical concepts, because the list of required skills and skill sets has been reduced significantly. We will transition into these standards slowly over the course of the next school year, where the ELA standards will be implemented in their entirety.
Finally, we will have one more year of TCAP before transitioning into the standardized assessment model. As we have more information regarding PARCC, we will be sure to keep you posted.
http://www.fcrr.org/studentactivities/language_45.htm
For those of you that are feeling crafty, this website has a list of activities and directions that can be printed and cut out to support reading. Click on the 4th and 5th grade activities, and then on the links provided on the page aligned with specific literacy skilled.

Reading Rockets is an excellent website that all parents and educators should bookmark! This literacy website created by the U.S. Department of Education is updated regularly with information regarding educational legislation, suggested reading lists and activities for students.
